I glanced across the living room at April, who was sitting on a sofa next to Steven. Well, not next to Steven, but close enough that I could see the look of boredom on April’s face. She wasn’t creeped out by the guy or anything, but I could tell she’d already long made up her mind that she wasn’t going to sleep with the guy. From the looks of things, Steven needed to learn how to take a hint better.

“Want a beer?” Jimmy asked. I smiled at April before turning my attention on him and nodding. “Sure, but just one. I don’t want you getting me all liquored up.”

“Sure thing, kid. Hope you like Budweiser, because it’s all I drink.”

“Sounds good, thanks.”

Jimmy smiled and placed his hand on my knee, using it as a crutch to hoist himself up off the couch, grimacing as he did so. His hand shot down towards his lower back and I knew he was in pain. I guess all those tosses I witnessed tonight took a toll on a man.

“What about the two of you?” Jimmy asked once he stood. “Beer?”

“Two,” Steven replied, glancing at April with a look of hopeful anticipation. She gave him a shrug in response.

Jimmy walked off and my eyes followed his denim-covered ass, watching it twitch as he made his way towards the kitchen. I glanced over at April and noticed her watching as well. She shot me a playfully jealous look that suggested I better have plenty of details in the morning. I shot her back a look that said, “no doubt, girl!” Steven sat and watched all of this. Probably wondering if this peculiar form on communicating was practiced only by African Americans. He cleared his throat and I worried he might ask.

“So, how long are you girls in town for?”

I glanced at April and then shrugged. “Another day or so at the most.”

A look of defeat washed over Steve’s face. No doubt he knew he wasn’t going to be sampling any exotic flavors on this night. I supposed he was like most men and assumed he could “work” his way into April’s pants. Little did he know, it doesn’t work that way. We either want you or not. No amount of pleading or scheming is gonna change that.

Steve began to ask another question but by then Jimmy had returned with two handfuls of beer. He handed April and Steve their bottles and then smiled at me. “What do you say I give you a tour of the house?”

I glanced at April and her widened eyes told me to get on with it. Still, I hesitated. I’d never had a one-night stand before, even though I’d always wanted to. Well, maybe wanted to isn’t the right phrase. More like I’d been curious as all hell to experience sex and only sex. See what it felt like to be a typical guy and not care about the feelings the next day. I thought all this over as Jimmy waited for a reply.
